Tiff and I took a short trip to Yosemite a few weeks ago and OMG was it gorgeous. Just look at that picture! We stayed in a rented cabin inside the park, where we were greeted by deer roaming outside our front door.

And it snowed!!

Two of the most memorable points in the trip were the beautiful waterfall (less than a mile from our cabin) and the Ahwahnee Hotel where we had an -awesome- lunch in a large dining hall where we could watch the blizzard outside.

I can’t wait to go back, it was an awe inspiring experience. However, there’s too many places we need to go, so we’ll probably make our next trip to Sequoia NP.

Oh, and we’re junior rangers… did you know?

I have no idea how this ended up being a photoblog, but here we are! Check out the sign. Eeep.

Was it worth the drive? Well, Las Vegas is on the other side of them there mountains. Course, at the time we didn’t know there’s a much safer route (not to mention quicker) that we had totally missed. (well, we thought we were going the quick way, but we neglected to take the signs seriously…

Oops.

It was worth it and awesome though. We saw absolutely gorgeous scenes, including Lake Isabella and the Kern River Valley.

We also nearly died.

Nothing like a near death experience to put some life back in ya!

Oops… I always forget about the poor blog. It’s k, I’ll do better! Here’s a pic of the only touchdown we scored at the Texas Bowl (I’m a UH Alum). Oh well…

I’m working on an interesting video project I hope to share more about here. We’re doing a documentary on Rock Band, which BTW, is very awesome.

I’ll be back before too long to post another pic. My sis and I -finally- ventured back to Brazos Bend, and I still need to upload the images. This time I got to use my neato 77-300mm lens :)

Morning Dew Web

I dunno what spider builds a web facing the ground… but it made for a nice picture. Click on the image to see the hi-res version, where you can see the individual dew drops, weighing down the web like pearls.

This picture, like many of the others I’ve posted, was taken at Brazos Bend state park. I plan to start geo coding these so that people can go to the park and see some of these great sights themselves! (not the web though, I’m pretty sure it’s gone)

Dead Oak

Like something out of a movie. I noticed the dead oak in the center of the pond in passing. We were more interested in the feral hogs in the meadow behind us. To think I almost missed this shot.

I experimented with bringing the tree into sharp focus, but it drowned out the detail of the surrounding vegetation. Since the dead oak (get it? the opposite of live oak!) had few details that needed to be preserved, I brought the focus to the foreground. This also limited the lens flare from the sun shining through the branches.

The shots of the feral hogs didn’t come out, since they were ~ 400 yards away, and I didn’t have a long enough lens to do them justice. Maybe next time.

I love this picture! That’s my sister, Sarah, standing under the tree with the bike. She’s actually horrified at that moment, but you can’t tell. She’s just spied some feral hogs in the meadow to the left. Four hundred pound pigs would scary anyone.

The lighting was not ideal for a photo, but I think the morning sun exploding through the trees from the right gave the photo interesting character. The tree looks massive in this shot.

The nonchalant demeanor of Sarah captures the majesty of this scene, and how often we ignore the most amazing sights.

The T-Mobile Shadow?

October 5th, 2007

This is alittle off-topic, as far as my blog goes, but heck…. it’s usually off topic!

There is a report that the HTC Juno, which has been bouncing around the Internets as the next T-Mobile handset from HTC, has gotten a name. The T-Mobile Shadow. Also with the report above comes rumors that not only is it a very cool new handset, but apparently is slated to be the first 3G T-Mobile handset!

The specs for the HTC Juno according to the rumors (or as I call them, facts) include only a 201MHz CPU, but memory at 128MB of RAM and 256MB ROM which is suppose to make it speedy. But is it 3G? I hope so, but my gut says no, since I’m not sure a 200mhz processor can handle a 3G connection.

Conference in Atlanta & One Vote

September 26th, 2007

It’s nice to be home again! I just got back from a CMS conference in Atlanta, which I was expecting to boring as hell, but actually turned out very interesting. It’s not hard to figure out what CMS I’m speaking about, but I haven’t decided if I want to disclose the name of it because I’m not sure how it’s going to work out. Everyone knows I’m opinionated, however I don’t want this to turn into a rant blog and as it is, I will wait until I’m sure where this thing is going before I commentate.

While I was in Atlanta, I stayed at the Sheraton Buckhead. It was going well until Tuesday afternoon, when the power went out and stayed out until well past midnight. No air conditioning, no Internet…. well, that’s basically all I give a damn about! Luckily, the bar was open, so my good friend and co-worker Jonathan and I hung out playing some DS and drinking a very good micro-brew.

A good friend of mine told me that the sushi in Atlanta was really good. This didn’t seem logical to me, considering Georgia’s further from the coast than most cities you’d consider as good places to get sushi (San Francisco for instance). But what the heck… I went to a place called Hashiguchi Junior, and it was amazing. If you’re ever in the Atlanta area, you should definitely try it! My recommendation: try the White Tuna.

One Vote

So how many times do you get to vote in an election? Well duh, one person, one vote. This concept is lost on the Texas legislature, who ignore the principle and instead play a modified game of musical chairs, where the winner gets their law passed. Trust me, this video will majorly piss you off.

Peace out ya’ll.

Long Time, No Blog

September 19th, 2007

Yeah, I know. Sorry. I’ve been busy load testing, as previously posted. I also got burgled, and have been dealing with insurance. It seems there’s a crime wave going on. I’m still sitting on glass in my car, as I can’t seem to find every piece.

We launched our beta website finally. I can’t link to it, because it’s a “private beta”. We don’t want too much traffic of course. But, considering I work for the University of Houston, I don’t think you’ll find it hard to locate the beta site if you’re persistent.

The MySQL Conference has made a “Call for Papers”. I’m considering sending something, but I haven’t decided what to speak about. When I figure it out, I’ll share it here for feedback.

Well, have a good week everyone. More on the beta website later.
